Fitzroy Island sits off the coast from Cairns in Queensland, Australia, rising from the Coral Sea with rainforest and beaches that draw visitors year-round. A short, scenic ferry ride from Cairns’ marlin marina brings visitors to this tropical island, part of the Fitzroy Island National Park where rainforest meets reef.

Welcome Bay’s coral-lined shoreline is a centerpiece here, where the water’s warm clarity makes it simple to snorkel just steps from the sand. Plenty of fish, soft and hard coral, and frequent sightings of green sea turtles greet snorkelers exploring bays around the coast. The fringing reef sits close to shore, letting visitors ease into the underwater world without needing a boat for the first glimpse of marine life.

Paths wind through lush rainforest up to lookout points and historic sites. A hike to the old lighthouse ridge rewards walkers with views across the Coral Sea and back toward the mainland, while shorter walks like the Secret Garden track reveal orchids, birds and calm nooks shaded by towering trees. The trails range from gentle strolls to adventurous climbs, letting every visitor match a walk to their pace.
